Kempton anticipating perfect going on Monday

KEMPTON is expecting the going to be "perfect for everyone" on Monday's star-studded card, which features the highly anticipated rematch between Kauto Star and Long Run in the William Hill King George VI Chase.

Speaking on Saturday, clerk of the course Barney Clifford was pleased with ground as he said: "We had five millimetres of rain yesterday and the ground is good to soft, with the chase course good in places. The GoingStick is 6.8 on the chase course and 6.2 on the hurdles track.

"The outlook is cloudy, mild and with temperatures between four and twelve degrees. It should be perfect going for everyone by Monday."

Wetherby, which stages the Grade 3 Rowland Meyrick Chase on Monday, also issued a positive ground report on Saturday, withclerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson looking forward to the two-day meeting which was wiped out by the icy weather last year.

Sanderson said: "We're still soft, good to soft in places. We had nine and a half millimetres of rainon Friday till four in the afternoon and it has been dry since with the wind picking up again. We are forecast a dry day tomorrow and Monday and don't anticipate things changing too much."

USUALLY it is a race meeting with a centrepiece as much a part of Boxing Day in Britain as turkey sandwiches, hangovers and indigestion - but the appalling weather that rounded off 2010 forced Kempton to abandon its two-day Christmas extravaganza. But not all was lost - the King George VI Chase and the Christmas Hurdle have been transferred to Saturday, January 15, 2011, and you can use our special site to get the most out of these two great races.

Once it was Desert Orchid who thrilled the country and stole the hearts of millions; his statue stands proudly beside the Kempton parade ring today. Last season saw a changing of the guard as young pretender Long Run won the race en route to claiming the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. However, four-time winner Kauto Star demonstrated he is no spent force when beating Long Run in the Betfair Chase at Haydock, and the two are set for a fascinating clash this year.
